Simple Techniques & Practices to Expand Your Self-Awareness

Hey!  Wanna dive into some easy-to-implement strategies that will  boost your self-awareness game?

In our crazy-busy world, it's super easy to lose touch with ourselves and our emotions. But by weaving some simple techniques and practices into our everyday lives, we can deepen our understanding of who we are and how we roll with the world around us.

Let's jump right in!

Reflect on Your Actions and Emotions:

Start by checking out your reactions to all the different situations you face in your life. Pay attention to the times you feel totally in your zone and confident, as well as the moments when you're not so sure or feel overwhelmed.  Figure out the reasons behind those emotions and what you can learn from them.

Here are some reflection prompts to help you take this deeper.

  1. What are three things I learned about myself today?

  2. How do I feel in different situations and environments?

  3. What internal and external factors influence my self-awareness?

Embrace Mindfulness:

Set aside some quality time each day to be present and mindful – try meditation, yoga, or even just a few deep breaths.

This practice will help you be more aware & intentional with your thoughts and feelings, supporting your overall well-being.

Benefits of Mindfulness

  1. Amplify your ability to be present in the moment.

  2. Improve your mental clarity and focus

  3. Strengthen your boundaries so you don’t take on other people's emotions & stuff  (unsupportive vibes)

  4. Increase your emotional resilience and stress management

  5. Enhance your overall well-being and positivity

Ask Insightful Questions:

Get into the habit of hitting yourself with thought-provoking questions like, "What is driving me right now?" or "How can I learn from this experience?"   You'll uncover some major aha moments and level up your self-awareness.

When asking yourself insightful questions, it's essential to consider the context and your wanted results.

Reflecting on questions like 'Is this thought or action useful for me in this situation?' and 'How does this align with my goals?' will enable you to make more informed decisions.

This practice ensures that you're focusing on aspects that support your growth and success while enhancing your understanding of your motivations and values.

Understand your Internal and External Influences:

Recognize that both your inner state of being, with your beliefs and mindset, and the external world, like your surroundings and relationships, shape your experiences.  By being aware of these influences, you can spot areas for healing, support, & growth.

Internal Influences:

  1. Beliefs and values: Your core beliefs and values play an important role in shaping your perception of yourself and the world around you. They serve as the foundation for your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.

  2. Thoughts and emotions: The way you think and feel about yourself, others, and situations can greatly impact your experiences, decisions, and overall well-being.

  3. Mindset: Your mindset, whether fixed or growth-oriented, determines how you approach challenges, embrace learning, and adapt to change.

External Influences:

  1. Environment: Your physical and social surroundings, such as your home, workplace, or community, can affect your emotions, behaviors, and overall life satisfaction.

  2. Relationships: The people in your life, including family, friends, and colleagues, play a crucial role in shaping your experiences, self-esteem, and personal growth.

  3. Societal norms and expectations: Cultural and societal factors often influence our beliefs, behaviors, and aspirations, affecting your self-perception and decision-making.

In sessions I guide you through assessing these internal and external influences.  We basically sort through and categorize things as useful or not useful to your wanted results.   By doing so, you gain a comprehensive understanding of the various factors impacting your experiences.

This holistic approach provides you with valuable insights and options to choose the most effective changes for achieving and sustaining your wanted results.

Tackle Challenges Head-On:

When life throws you curveballs like burnout, stress, or overwhelm, face  them head-on by addressing the root causes and taking action.  This approach will strengthen your self-awareness and resilience.

Expanding your self-awareness is a practice.  It takes compassion towards yourself, curiosity, and commitment.

By bringing these simple techniques and practices into your day, you can deepen your understanding of yourself and achieve your wanted results faster.

Remember, every step either gets you closer to achieving your results or serves as a valuable lesson to help you refine your approach.  When you learn to embrace each step with a growth mindset, you know that every experience offers an opportunity to learn and grow.

As you commit to this practice, you'll notice the skill of self-awareness expanding to other aspects of your life.  Not only will you gain a deeper understanding of yourself, but you'll also enhance the resilience and flexibility you need as you move forward.

A Personal Example: The Transformative Power of Skill Transfer Through Self-Awareness

Let me share a story about my own self-awareness journey. Over the past year and a half, I've been exploring why I excel in some areas of life while struggling in others. One place I feel totally in my element is the kitchen.  You know why? I'm not afraid to take risks, try new things, and learn from my mistakes. When a dish doesn't turn out as I'd hoped, I don't give up.

Instead of judging my performance or motivation, I became curious about my strengths and weaknesses. I asked myself questions like, "Why do I feel confident in the kitchen?" and "How can I apply these skills to other areas of my life?"

Instead of judging myself for my lack of ability, performance, or motivation towards doing something I got curious about it.  I started to ask myself certain types of questions and I did a quick deep dive into what my process is.

  • I realized that I excel in the kitchen because I believe that I can.

  • I have tons of evidence and practice in cultivating this skill.

  • I trust myself in the kitchen.  I trust myself to figure things out.

  • When things go wrong I don’t make it mean anything about me and my capability.

  • I can break dishes, mess up meals, and have things be what I consider a disaster and I will still come back to it again & again.

  • Plus it’s something I enjoy doing and is a way I express my creativity.

When cleaning the kitchen or starting a meal.  I know that there is a certain structure to do things in, that work for me and support me to take the steps needed to complete the task.

And most importantly I know the steps that I need to take or I have a pretty good idea of the direction I should go.  This is powerful.

Through this self-exploration, I discovered that I excelled in the kitchen because I believed in my capabilities, had plenty of practice/evidence, and I trusted myself to figure things out. Even when things went wrong,

As a coach, I help my clients go through a similar process.  I guide you through a simple process so you understand the processes that support you to excel in specific areas of your life.  By identifying these strengths and skill sets, we work together to transfer these abilities to other contexts.

This skill transfer helps you use what already works well for you to support you to navigate challenges in various aspects of your life.  Just like my experience in the kitchen, it's all about self-awareness, asking the right questions, and trusting in your capabilities.

So, how can you apply these self-awareness techniques to your own life?
