6 Reasons Why Your Affirmations Aren’t Working

6 Reasons Why Your Affirmations Aren’t Working. and a picture that says good vibes only and Jasmine Renee's logo

Have you been affirming and changing your beliefs, yet you feel like something is missing?

While affirmations and belief changes are beneficial starting points for personal growth, there's more to sustainable change than these practices alone.  To achieve long-term success, we must align our beliefs with our expectations and actions.  This is a holistic process, each part supporting you to move forward and achieve your goals.

1. Do you believe what you’re affirming?

Belief is crucial for affirmations to work.  If your affirmations feel unrealistic or too far from your current reality, your mind might resist them.  To make them more effective, try adjusting them to be more believable and achievable.

Examples:

  1. Instead of saying "My business is wildly successful," you could say, "I am consistently growing my business and attracting new clients every day."

  2. Instead of saying "I have an amazing job," you could say, "I am actively seeking and attracting great career opportunities."

2. Are you structuring your Affirmations properly?

The phrasing of your affirmations matters.  They should be positive, present tense, and specific.

Example:

Instead of "I will be confident," say "I’m learning to be confident at / in  ______." This helps your mind accept the affirmation as a current reality.

3. How often should I repeat my affirmations?

Consistency is key when it comes to affirmations. Repeating them regularly, ideally daily, helps reinforce the messages in your subconscious mind.  Consider setting aside a specific time each day like in the morning to practice your affirmations.

4. Are your affirmations aligned with my Values and Goals?

Your affirmations need to resonate with what you really want and your values.  If they don’t align with what you genuinely want, they might not be effective.  Reflect on your core values and goals to ensure your affirmations are aligned with them.

5. Do I need to visualize while saying my affirmations?

Visualizing the outcome while saying your affirmations can enhance their effectiveness. Picture yourself living the affirmation to make it more real and powerful. This adds an emotional component that can strengthen your belief.

For example:

If your affirmation is: I’m learning to be confident at public speaking, visualize yourself being on stage or in front of a group of people speaking while feeling confident.

Take notice of:

  1. What would you say if you really felt confident?

  2. How would you move if you really felt confident?

  3. How would you feel if you really felt confident?

  4. What kinds of thoughts would you be thinking if you really felt confident?

Feel into that.  Breathe it in.

6. Why do I feel uncomfortable or resistant to my affirmations?

Discomfort or resistance is an indication that there’s something coming up for you.  If you feel uneasy saying your affirmations, take some time to explore these feelings. Understanding and addressing these underlying issues will support you to know what the deeper level things are creating interference between you and your wanted results.

One of the things I do is ask you a series of questions that help you to break through to the root cause of what’s coming up around this so that you can shift it.

Here’s a question to consider:

Take a slow deep breath.  Bring your awareness into the present moment.  Pick 1 specific affirmation.  Now ask yourself, What's holding me back from fully owning this?
